The geologic formations of Michigan span more than billion years, from some of the oldest Precambrian rocks to loose, unconsolidated drift left behind by the continental ice sheets of the Pleistocene period. The following series of maps illustrates the general configuration of the geologic basement of the Great Lakes region, and of Michigan. The Penokean Mountains formerly were assigned erroneously to late Keweenawan time. The Early Precambrian rocks are divided into the Ontarian and the Timiskamian systems. The Ontarian rocks include the Keewatin group of Minnesota and the Coutchiching metasediments which underlie the Keewatin greenstones in Ontario.
Two major areas typify District geology. The uppermost area, called the surficial geologic zone, contains materials deposited by glaciers. Precambrian, Cambrian and Ordovician rock formations make up the lower or bedrock geology. This section describes each major geologic area. Glaciers crafted the watershed's surface geology when they retreated and dropped "drift" on the land. The glacial. Although the latest comprehensive report is that of Butler and Burbank (), much of the more recent literature is covered in a review of the Keweenawan geology of the Lake Superior region by Halls () and in papers on the geology of the Michigan copper district by White (, ).
The Lower Precambrian rocks in Cook County are the eastern extension of the Vermilion district, a typical Archean metavolcanic-metasedimentary terrane. The district, as defined originally by Clements (), consti tutes a narrow belt of rocks that extends from the vicinity of Tower, near. Turek, A., and Robinson, R.N. Two mafic syenite intrusions are exposed to the south of the eastern end of Thirty-Mile Lake where they penetrate basement gneisses and rocks of the Kaminak (?) Group (LeCheminant et al., ). The Precambrian rocks, older than 2, m.y., in the Saganaga Lake-Northern Light Lake area on the Minnesota-Ontario boundary include a thick succession of metavolcanic rocks, chiefly greenstone but with some intermediate to silicic types, and minor metasediments; the Northern Light Gneiss; the Saganaga Tonalite; alkalic syenodiorite and granodiorite; and the Knife Lake Group.
